Hks mushroom filters are only a small step up from just installing a screen over the compressor intake. Is anyone surprised? Not really.

Kinja'd!!!

I got excuses, but K&N long cones will be replacing these unless anyone has a better idea.

Jesus. I almost made a similar mistake with my current build because I didn’t know oiled filters are really bad for some cars. On a turbo subaru, dropping in a K&N oiled filter will clog the MAF. Could this be grease from the filter itself with dirt and dust in it? If you go for K&N I would look for a “dry” filter to be safe.

This is because the turbo draws air from behind the rear axle where the trunk goes and I live a ways out some private property with a dirt road, the oiling system splashes onto the filter. The Hks is dry it just dosent filter that well, though I’m sure it flows very well.

With this setup the maf (Karmen vortex but close enough) is just in front of the passenger seat so oil in the intake will have to travel through at least 7 feet of charge pipe, I doubt that it will be an issue plus id rather deal with oil than oily dirt maring the cylinder walls.

Cool, I appreciate the explanation. This is such a crazy build! So embarrassing that I can’t stage 2/big brake kit my WRX in less than 2 months haha smh

I run 1/5th scale gas RC trucks in the sand, running a foam filter without oil will end your motor in probably a few minutes.

Foam filters are essentially worthless without oil, it doesn’t work. Paper filters are the only dry system that works against small particles.

Some of that is due to over-oiling when servicing the filter.

I wouldnt be too embarrassed, this is month 4 since deciding to commit to this project and since FI I’ve driven it less than 300 miles working out kinks and flaws in planning(like buying the wrong filters, placing the return pump too high, oil pumps getting too hot and turning off, etc)

OHHHH, you wanted to filter the DIRT out of the AIR. I get it now.

Maybe some time for some shielding?

Yes but I’m currently without the means to make one

Amsoil Ea filters, they use Donaldson’s nano media which is top tier stuff.

Yep, in my 200k miles of K&N usage in finicky VW engines, I’ve had zero trouble. I spray the MAF with cleaner every 20-30k miles as a preventive measure (I have some old data logs that prove this works!). But mainly you just need to take it easy on the oiling.

After all these Blackstone tests showing virtually zero particulates in my oil, and not a single premature MAF failure, I still think this is one of the most oversold rumors on the web. YMMV

Seal the hole(s) in the trunk and use the rear seat as an air filter.

My experience is exactly the same. Never thrown a code after many years and hundreds of thousands of miles.

Rear seats are long gone.

Similarly outlandish ideas; Install a supra spoiler, cut holes in the top than plumb the intake to the trunk at the spoiler mounting points so it pulls air through the spoiler. What could go wrong.

Mold in a vent in front of the rear tire behind the door and plumb that to the turbo intake with some sort of oem Airbox

Aluminum foil and aluminum foil tape would be a super low buck way of keeping some of the debris away from the turbos.

The way it is right now the hole cut in the trunk needs a metal sheet with vents to keep water from splashing when I hit puddles, but the dust will still be an issue no matter what I do unless I plumb the intake to pull from somewhere else. I’m not sure how I’m gonna do this yet but these filters got to go.

I mean for a temporary fix you could like make a shield that kind of deflects the stuff from the trunk hole away from the turbo inlet. Foil with foil tape on it is pretty decent for ducting air.

Hmm, ideally I think you would have to move the turbos under the trunk level as trying to seal the exhaust will be difficult, but if you had just the turbo inlets and the compressor outs going through the trunk then that could be done pretty easily.

Pretty interesting problem, I wonder what the camaro or porsche guys do with their rear mount turbos.

The original plan was to have the turbos sit under the trunk with both intakes facing each other(hence the mushroom filters) but that idea was scrapped because I thought it would intake too much dirt and it ran a higher risk of snagging an oil line on something. There was also worry of the turbos being that close to the elements with water splashes and bottoming out (potentially misguided fears since most rearmounts sit quite low)

Isolating the intake shouldn’t be too hard but I’m not sure where I want to pull air from. Most rear mounts pull with a cone filter right behind the rear tire or muffler area. This setup may be unique in that it sees dirt roads and actual clouds of dust. Having the trunk hole does have the benefit of keeping the oil pumps and oil, cooler aswell. The downside being intake grime and general dirtiness of everything in the trunk.

I’m beginning to think that maybe having a duct on the side of the car may work, but I’m not so sure about how that will look. Maybe an mr2 vent behind the door to pull cleaner air? It seems that many rear engined cars pull from the sides or top for air. Naca ducts would be the best but it may look too goofy.

Might be time to break out some Photoshop.
